Week 1-2

A. Building a profile

The rules are very easy for this exercise and they are as follows:
  1. You have to go up to the board and write down the answers to all of you questions. Make sure to categorize them
  2. You have 30 minutes to ask questions.  Any question that you would typically ask someone to learn more about them.  They can be professional or personal in nature
  3. Be creative when asking questions.
  4. Let me know when you have finished asking question by saying something like: That's all the questions that I have for now.  This helps me know you a little bit better.


B. What is Dropbox and Why would You use it?

Watch the following short video in the following sequence:
  1. Watch the entire video without taking any notes.  Just concentrate on understanding what the speaker describes Dropbox.
  2. Watch the video a second time and pay close attention to the words that you may not know.  Write them down and we'll discuss them.  Take notes of the functionality of Dropbox, its advantages and uses.
  3. Prepare a 3 minute speech explaining the following:
    • What is Dropbox?
    • What are the advantages of using this product? Basically, why would you use Dropbox? Please ensure to add some personal examples of how you think this would be helpful to someone like you
    • Your opinion of this product and final recommendation.




C. Expressing one's opinion about a controversial subject

Listen to the following audio file of students discussing the subject of e-cigarettes

Vocabulary:
  1. kick the habit (idiom)to stop doing something that is difficult to stop doing, especially taking drugs, smoking, or drinking alcohol 
  2. getting a fix (idion): having their need satisfied 
  3. nasty (adj): bad; terrible 
  4. weird (adj): strange
  5. endless (adj): something that does not stop; it has no end
  6. stick to it (idiom): continue doing something
  7. to appeal v):  a quality that causes people to like someone or something
  8. doomed: very bad events or situations that cannot be avoided

Exercise:

  1. Prepare and deliver a short presentation (3-5m) about e-cigarettes from the point of view of a store owner planning to start a business selling them to general public. You are in favor of selling them openly to anyone over the age of 16. Make sure to build some solid arguments based on what you heard and read.
  2. Prepare and deliver a short presentation (3-5m) about e-cigarettes from the point of view of an anti-smoking organization that is strongly opposed their sale. You are against selling them openly to anyone over the age of 16 mainly because of health reasons BUT you use other arguments to solidify your position. 
I will ask you 2 question after each presentation
